October is National Bullying Prevention Month, and it gives us a meaningful opportunity to renew a promise we make to every student: this district is a safe place to learn, grow, and be yourself.
Creating that safety isn't the work of any single classroom, office, or campaign — it happens when staff, families, and students are all speaking the same language about what bullying is, how we respond to it, and what kindness looks like in practice. That's why this month we're asking every site to align around three shared messages:
What we're asking of our school community:
- Staff: Reinforce consistent bullying-reporting procedures and use common language across classrooms so students hear the same expectations everywhere they go.
- Families: Talk with your student about what bullying looks like, encourage them to speak up — for themselves or someone else — and reach out to your school's office if a concern comes up.
- Students: Be an upstander, not a bystander. A small act — inviting someone in, telling an adult, offering a kind word — can change someone's whole day.
Every site will be sharing activities throughout October to bring these ideas to life. Thank you for partnering with us to make sure every child in this district feels seen, safe, and valued.
With gratitude,
Dr. Tinisha Hamberlin
