At Enterprise Elementary, students in the Special Day Classes (SDC) took part in an interactive cooking program that helped them build important life skills through real-world application.
The program, guided by teachers, aides, specialists, and district staff, gave students the chance to earn classroom currency through academic tasks, which they then used to “pay” for cooking activities. The experience tied together key concepts like budgeting, saving, and making choices.
After voting on what to cook, students worked together to create grocery lists, discuss ingredients, and simulate shopping during speech sessions. With adult support, they prepared simple recipes like s’mores and cheese quesadillas, taking part in every step from measuring to cleanup.
The cooking experience encouraged communication, teamwork, and independence, all while reinforcing classroom learning in a fun and meaningful way.
